Are You Getting Married for the Right Reasons?

5 reasons for getting married and 3 for not rushing into it

The idea of getting married can be so exciting. A big party, looking amazing, all of your family and friends crying and cheering you on. Yep, the idea is great.

But is getting married actually right for you? You need to make sure you’re getting married for the right reasons if your marriage is going to last. Here are a few reasons you should get married, and a few you shouldn’t:

Getting Married is Right for You if…

You Want to Spend the Rest of Your Life With Your Partner

If you genuinely want to spend the rest of your life with your partner, getting married is right for you. You should find it easy to picture your future with them. It should be a happy one too!

You’ve Been Together a While

Getting married early on rarely works. You need to know your partner well before you marry them, or you might end up in an unhappy relationship. Everybody feels intensely at the start of a relationship, but what counts is how you feel after those intense feelings have died down.

You Want to Celebrate Your Relationship

Celebrating your relationship with the people you love is a good reason to get married. In every culture, marriage is the celebration of a relationship. However, it can mean different things in different countries. Chinese weddings are for bringing families together too. What does your marriage mean to you?

You’ve Lived Together

Living with your partner is a pretty crucial step before you can marry them too. How will you know that you can live with them in harmony if you don’t? Their imperfections might not be so endearing to you anymore once you live with them.

It’s What You Both Want

Do both you and your partner want this? You shouldn’t pressure your partner into anything they don’t want to do. You both need to be ready if this is going to work.

Getting Married Isn’t for You if…

You’re Rushing into it

If you’re rushing into this decision, it’s probably the wrong one. Nobody can tell you when the right time is, but taking your time is usually the best way to do it. It’s OK to stay engaged for a while before you get married, so consider that.

You’re not Happy

If you’re not happy, you can’t expect marriage to miraculously fix your problems. You need to be in a good place before you get married, not afterwards. Be honest with yourself.

You Feel Pressured

If you feel pressured into getting married, it’s another sign you shouldn’t be doing it. You need to be ready, so have an honest chat with your partner. It’s the only way this won’t end in tears.

Are you getting married for the right reasons? Or do you feel that marriage will solve all of your relationship problems? You should have a good idea by now. You need to do what’s right for you. Being alone is better than being unhappy with somebody else!
